About Lungomare Pula
Lungomare Pula is a historic coastal promenade stretching for approximately four kilometres along the southern edge of the city. Running from the Valkane area through Gortanova Cove and towards Valsaline, it is one of the most popular outdoor spaces in Pula for both residents and visitors. The route follows the natural coastline, combining pine forests, rocky shores, sea views, and easy access to the Adriatic Sea.
The promenade dates back to the Austro-Hungarian period, when Pula developed into one of the empire’s most important naval centres. Coastal walkways and recreational areas were created as places where residents and military officers could enjoy the sea air and Mediterranean surroundings. More than a century later, Lungomare continues to serve the same purpose as a place for relaxation, recreation, and everyday life.
Along the route, visitors encounter a mixture of rocky swimming platforms, natural stone beaches, and family-friendly pebble coves. Popular spots include Valkane Beach, Gortanova Cove, and Valsaline Beach, each offering different experiences while remaining connected by the continuous promenade. Benches, viewpoints, cafés, and shaded sections make the walk enjoyable throughout much of the year.
Today, Lungomare remains one of the best places in Pula to experience the city’s coastal character. It combines nature, history, swimming, walking, and local daily life in a single seaside route.
Explore Lungomare Pula
Walking along Lungomare reveals constantly changing views of the Adriatic. Sections of the promenade pass through fragrant pine woods before opening onto rocky viewpoints overlooking the sea. The combination of natural shade and sea breezes makes it especially pleasant during warmer months.
Numerous access points lead directly to the water. Some visitors prefer the smooth rocky plateaus popular for sunbathing, while others choose pebble coves such as Gortanova Uvala or Valsaline for easier swimming access. The clear water also attracts snorkellers and recreational swimmers.
Several beach cafés and seasonal facilities are located near the main beach areas. Visitors can stop for refreshments, rent equipment for water activities, or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that characterises this stretch of coastline.
Late afternoon and sunset are particularly popular times to visit. As the sun drops over the Adriatic, many people gather along the promenade to enjoy one of Pula’s most attractive coastal views.

VisitPula Our Take
Lungomare is ideal for visitors looking to experience the natural side of Pula beyond the city’s Roman monuments. It suits walkers, swimmers, runners, photographers, families, and anyone wanting a relaxing seaside atmosphere.
The biggest advantage is flexibility. You can spend twenty minutes enjoying the views, walk the entire route, stop for a swim, or combine several beaches into a half-day outing. Few places in Pula combine recreation, scenery, and local life so naturally.
For the most enjoyable experience, visit early in the morning or during the late afternoon when temperatures are lower and the coastline is at its most scenic. Allow between one and three hours depending on how many stops you make.
