About Lighting Giants Pula

Lighting Giants Pula is a permanent light installation that transforms the towering cranes of the historic Uljanik Shipyard into a colourful work of contemporary public art. Located on Uljanik Island inside Pula’s harbour, the cranes remain part of an active shipyard while becoming one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks after sunset.

The project was conceived by Croatian lighting designer Dean Skira, who recognised the dramatic silhouettes of the cranes as sculptures waiting to be illuminated. After years of development in cooperation with the city and the shipyard, the installation officially premiered in 2014 using programmable RGB LED lighting capable of producing thousands of colour combinations.

Unlike a traditional attraction, Lighting Giants is experienced from the city waterfront rather than inside the shipyard. Visitors gather along the Riva promenade, parks and nearby cafés to watch the changing colours reflected across the harbour, creating a memorable contrast between Pula’s industrial heritage and its Roman monuments.

Explore Lighting Giants Pula

As dusk falls, the outlines of the cranes gradually come to life before the scheduled hourly light sequence begins. During the approximately fifteen-minute shows, individual cranes are highlighted in changing colours while others illuminate together in synchronised patterns across the skyline.

The reflections across the calm waters of Pula Bay make the promenade one of the city’s favourite evening photography locations. Long exposures often capture both the illuminated cranes and the nearby waterfront in a single composition.

The colour schemes occasionally change for public holidays, sporting events and local celebrations, giving repeat visitors the opportunity to experience different displays throughout the year.

Although the cranes stand inside the secure shipyard and cannot be visited directly, the surrounding waterfront offers several excellent viewpoints within easy walking distance of the Arena and the historic centre.

VisitPula Our Take

Lighting Giants is ideal for anyone exploring Pula in the evening. Whether you’re interested in architecture, photography, industrial heritage or simply enjoying the waterfront, it provides a memorable experience without requiring tickets or advance planning.

The best time to visit is shortly after sunset, when the harbour is dark enough for the colours to stand out while the city remains lively. Allow around 20 to 45 minutes to enjoy one of the scheduled light sequences and stroll along the promenade.

Remember that the cranes are part of an active shipyard. The installation is viewed entirely from public areas along the waterfront, and there is no access to Uljanik Island itself.
