About INK
Istrian National Theatre – City Theatre Pula, commonly known as INK, is one of Pula’s principal cultural institutions and a historic landmark with roots in the city’s rapid development during the 19th century. The present theatre grew from the vision of entrepreneur and benefactor Pietro Ciscutti, who financed a larger cultural venue after his earlier Teatro Nuovo could no longer meet the needs of the expanding city.
Designed by architect Ruggero Berlam, the new theatre was built at Ciscutti’s expense. Its foundation stone was laid on 22 August 1879 and the building was ceremonially opened on 2 December 1880. After the auditorium and stage had been fully equipped, the theatre was formally inaugurated on 24 September 1881 with Filippo Marchetti’s opera Ruy Blas. Known as Politeama Ciscutti, it originally accommodated approximately 800 spectators and hosted opera, theatre, concerts, cinema, dances, public celebrations and other forms of entertainment.
The National Theatre in Pula was established in 1948, with its first production performed by its own ensemble in January 1949. The ageing theatre building was closed in 1970 and later underwent major reconstruction. It reopened in 1989 with improved stage, technical and audience facilities.
Today, INK remains an active part of Pula’s cultural life. Its programme combines its own productions with visiting performances, drama, music, dance and other stage events, making it both an important piece of the city’s architectural heritage and a working contemporary theatre.
Explore INK
The best way to experience INK is by attending a scheduled performance. Depending on the programme, visitors can encounter drama, contemporary theatre, concerts, dance, opera, ballet and guest productions from other companies and cultural institutions.
The historic heart of the building is the Pietro Ciscutti Theatre Hall, named after the entrepreneur and benefactor responsible for creating the theatre. The name connects today’s cultural programme directly with the building’s 19th-century origins.
INK also has a Small Stage and supports exhibitions, workshops and smaller cultural programmes. Its Drama and Dance Studio provides theatre and dance education for children, young people and adults, making the institution particularly relevant to local residents as well as visitors.
The programme changes throughout the season, so anyone interested in attending a performance should check the current calendar before planning a visit.

VisitPula Our Take
INK is particularly worthwhile for travellers interested in performing arts, architecture and Pula’s more recent history. It offers a different perspective on the city from its Roman monuments, revealing the cultural ambitions of rapidly expanding Pula in the late 19th century.
The strongest reason to visit is to attend a performance rather than simply view the building from outside. Check the programme before your trip and choose an event that suits your interests; a performance combines a cultural evening with the opportunity to experience one of Pula’s historic public buildings from inside.
Allow enough time for the complete performance or event you choose. INK is an active theatre rather than a conventional attraction with fixed sightseeing hours, so access and visit duration depend on the scheduled programme.
