Visit Pula Review

Island Andrija is one of Pula’s most intriguing military outposts, best experienced from a boat as you circle its fort-covered, vegetation-choked slopes. Its history is rich, its atmosphere wild, and its views unforgettable.

The island feels abandoned yet powerful, with towering 19th-century walls hidden under greenery and no modern development in sight. Photographers, history lovers and boaters enjoy a calm 30–60 minute loop, usually without crowds even in high summer.

The best time is early morning, when soft light highlights the fortress geometry and Pula Bay is at its calmest.

About

Island Andrija sits inside Pula Bay, just opposite the city and Uljanik shipyard, yet it feels like a forgotten world. Once a crucial defensive point, it hosted a Byzantine monastery, Venetian fortifications, an early 19th-century Napoleon-era fortress, and the imposing Fort Kaiser Franz I built in 1823.

Today the island is completely overgrown, its walls wrapped in vegetation that gives it a mysterious, temple-like appearance. Walking on the island is extremely difficult and officially discouraged; most visitors admire it from the sea.

This is a place for photographers, history fans and boaters who enjoy quiet exploration, unique scenery and a short, atmospheric detour within the bay. A typical visit lasts 30–60 minutes.
