About Hawaii Beach
Hawaii Beach is a small pebble cove on the Verudela peninsula, in Pula’s main coastal resort area. The cove is also known locally as Havajsko or Havajska plaža, while the geographical name of the bay is Procipina. It lies below the hotels and walking paths of Verudela, enclosed by a distinctly rocky section of coastline.
The central part of the cove consists of rounded pebbles, while higher rocks rise on both sides. This compact setting is a major part of the beach’s character, but it also means that there is relatively little space on the shoreline compared with Pula’s larger beaches.
There is no natural shade directly across the main pebble section. Pine trees and shaded ground can be found above and behind the beach, making it possible to retreat from the sun without expecting tree cover directly beside the water.
The surrounding rocky coastline is also of interest to snorkellers. An official Istria snorkelling route continues west from Hawaii Beach towards the nearby Verudela Canyon, following the rocky underwater landscape.
Swimming & Sea Conditions
The main pebble section has a gradual entrance into the sea, with shallower water close to shore. A swimming boundary is marked in the bay, while the sides of the cove become rocky and lead towards deeper water.
The combination of pebbles, submerged rocks and an indented coastline makes Hawaii Beach particularly interesting for swimming and snorkelling. Water shoes can be useful for moving between the pebble shore and the surrounding rocky sections.
The cove is exposed to the open sea and strong southerly winds can produce significant waves. Conditions should therefore be assessed on the day, particularly before swimming near the rocks or considering any jumps from the surrounding cliffs.
Families & Accessibility
The gradual entry from the central pebble shoreline and shallow water close to shore can work well for families, and the official Istria tourism portal specifically identifies Hawaii Beach as suitable for families with small children. Parents should still take into account the beach’s small size, rocky surroundings and changing sea conditions.
There are no toilets, showers or other basic facilities directly on the beach, so a longer stay with younger children requires more preparation than at a fully serviced beach. Shade is also not available directly across the main pebble shoreline.
Access to the cove involves steps, with rocky side paths also present. Combined with the pebble and rock surface at beach level, this makes Hawaii Beach a poor choice for visitors who require step-free access; it should not be described as wheelchair accessible.
Our Take
Hawaii Beach suits visitors who prefer a compact natural-looking cove to a large, fully serviced beach. Its strongest feature is the setting: a small pebble shoreline enclosed by rocks, with interesting swimming and snorkelling along the surrounding coast.
The trade-off is space and convenience. The beach itself is small, has little room once it becomes busy and does not offer toilets, showers or lifeguard service directly on the shore. Visitors looking for more facilities or easier access may prefer another beach on Verudela.
VisitPula tip: Bring water, sun protection and water shoes, and consider visiting earlier in the day when you have a better chance of finding space on the small pebble shoreline.
