Fratarski Island, also known as Island Veruda, sits at the entrance to Veruda Bay just south of Pula. It is officially uninhabited, but in the summer months, it becomes a simple camping island with a loyal following among Pula locals. Tall pine trees cover most of the interior, giving cool shade only a few metres from the sea.

The coastline is a mix of a main pebble eco beach and long stretches of low, rocky shore with small coves and ledges. The water is usually calm thanks to the sheltered bay, with good clarity and a seabed that quickly becomes deeper once you leave the shallows. It is one of the area’s favourites for long swims and easy snorkeling close to the rocks.

Walking here is straightforward: natural dirt paths loop through the pines and along the coast, with enough viewpoints for photos toward Verudela, the open sea and the mainland. The island is compact, so you can easily circle it at a relaxed pace, but the terrain is uneven and tree roots and rocks mean it is not really stroller- or wheelchair-friendly.

Fratarski is best suited to visitors who enjoy a low-key, outdoorsy day: swimming, picnics, barbecues, reading in a hammock, and watching boats slide past in Veruda Bay. It works both as a quick half-day from Pula and as a full beach-and-picnic day, especially for families and groups who appreciate shade and a more local atmosphere than the big hotel beaches.

Getting there & parking

Access to Fratarski Island is by boat only. In the main season a small passenger boat runs regularly from Marina Bunarina, just south of Pula and close to the Verudela area. The crossing takes around 10 minutes and drops you directly at the pier on the north side of the island, a short walk from the camp reception and main beach.

Tickets are typically bought at or near the pier before boarding; in high season it is wise to arrive a little early for your chosen departure, especially on weekends and during events. The timetable usually offers multiple departures during the day in both directions, making it easy to plan either a short visit or a full day on the island.

For visitors arriving by car, there is parking available around Marina Bunarina on the mainland side. Spaces can fill up in peak summer hours, so consider coming earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon. If you are staying in the Verudela or Pula city area, a short taxi ride, local bus or coastal walk will bring you to the marina without needing to drive.

Small private boats are allowed to moor at the island pier when space permits, but the area around the eco beach is protected, with a buoyed swimming zone where motor boats are not allowed. There are no fuel or repair services on the island, so private skippers should come prepared and respect local navigation and anchoring rules.

Things to do

Swim and snorkel around the island – Start at the main pebble beach for easy entry and shallow water, then explore the rocky coves and deeper sections of coast for longer swims. The clear sea and rocky seabed give good conditions for spotting fish and marine life near the shore.

Walk the pine-covered paths – Follow the natural trails that loop through the interior and along the coast. They are mostly flat and easy, with plenty of shade and viewpoints back towards Pula, Verudela and the open sea. It is a relaxed circuit you can complete in under an hour with photo stops.

Enjoy a picnic or barbecue – Many locals come mainly to grill. Use the designated barbecue areas near the camp, bring your own food from the mainland and enjoy a long lunch under the trees. Rubbish bins are provided, but it is still good practice to leave the island cleaner than you found it.

Play and relax at the camp – Families and groups can make use of the simple sports courts and playground, or just set up hammocks and chairs in the pine forest. The small beach bar offers drinks and simple snacks, making it a convenient base between swims.

Soak up the local vibe – Fratarski is known as a Pula “second home” island, so you will mostly be among locals and returning campers rather than organised tours. Summer events, casual gatherings and social evenings around the grills and bar give the island a unique, friendly atmosphere.

Tips for families and kids

The main eco beach is the best spot for younger children, with pebbles and a gradual entry into the sea before it becomes deeper. The buoyed swimming zone helps keep boats away, and there is natural shade from the pines just behind the shore, which is very useful in the middle of the day.

Outside the main beach, much of the coastline is rocky with sudden depth changes, so older kids and confident swimmers will enjoy jumping and snorkeling, while younger ones need close supervision. Water shoes are a good idea to protect from rocks and occasional sea urchins.

Paths across the island are natural dirt tracks with stones and roots, so they are not ideal for strollers. If you have a baby or toddler, a carrier is much easier. The play area and open spaces near the camp make it easier to keep an eye on children while still enjoying the shade and sea breeze.

There is no lifeguard service, so parents and group leaders remain fully responsible for safety in and around the water. Bring enough drinking water and snacks for kids, especially on hot days, and plan rest breaks in the shade to avoid overheating and sunburn.
