About Church of St. Mary Pula
Church of St. Mary Pula stands near Dante Square in the historic centre of Pula. The church at this location is documented by the local parish as the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, or Misericordia. It was built in 1338 and enlarged in 1447, giving it a history stretching back almost seven centuries.
In 1453, Bishop Mojsije Buffarelli granted the site to Augustinian hermits, who established a monastery here. The Augustinians remained until 1780, leaving an important mark on the religious history of the church and its surroundings.
The church suffered damage in a fire in 1858 and was subsequently rebuilt and restored. Its surviving features include a relief of Mary the Protectress on the façade, a decorated stone custodia and religious artworks connected with the church’s long devotional tradition.
The church remains part of Pula’s active Catholic life today. Its central location makes it an easy addition to a walk through the historic centre, while its continuing religious use means visitors should respect services and other parish activities.
