About Archaeological Museum of Istria

The Archaeological Museum of Istria is a Pula-based institution dedicated to researching, preserving and presenting the archaeological heritage of the Istrian peninsula. Its collections cover prehistory, the Roman period, the Middle Ages and the modern era, alongside specialist collections devoted to coins and underwater archaeology.

The museum’s origins lie in the founding of Pula’s Civic Museum in 1902. Finds from excavations at nearby Nesactium played an important role in establishing its early collections. As the institution developed into a regional museum, it moved into the former State Gymnasium on the eastern slope of Kaštel hill, opening there to the public in 1930. It received its present name in 1947.

The setting places the museum within the historic core of Pula, close to the Twin Gates and Small Roman Theatre. This connection between the institution and the surrounding archaeological landscape makes it relevant to anyone interested in understanding how the city developed through successive periods.

The main building is currently closed while a new permanent exhibition is prepared. The museum continues to present heritage through its galleries, archaeological sites and exhibitions at separate locations. Check the official programme to see what is available during your stay.

Explore Archaeological Museum of Istria

The planned permanent exhibition will follow a chronological journey through Istria’s past. Its themes extend from the region’s early landscapes and prehistoric settlements to Histrian communities, Roman rule, medieval society and Pula’s development as an Austro-Hungarian naval port.

Original objects will be combined with models, illustrations and multimedia interpretation. Coins and underwater archaeological finds will add perspectives on trade, movement and connections across the Adriatic. Interactive content and interpretation for younger visitors are also planned.

Until the main building reopens, explore the museum’s wider network of locations. The official website lists current gallery exhibitions and separate permanent displays, including those at the Temple of Augustus and in the subterranean chambers of Pula Arena. Each venue has its own visiting arrangements.
