About Višnjan Observatory
Višnjan Observatory is a scientific and educational centre near Višnjan in western Istria, with its present research facility on Tičan Hill, around three kilometres north of the town. Its scientific work focuses particularly on small bodies in the Solar System, including asteroids, comets and near-Earth objects.
The observatory has a long record of asteroid research. Its earlier facility in Višnjan became internationally recognised for astrometric observations and asteroid discoveries, but increasing light pollution led scientific activities to move to Tičan. Construction of the new observatory began in 1998, and its one-metre telescope was installed in 2002. The facility returned to active research after the telescope’s development and commissioning work was completed.
Today Višnjan combines research with a strong educational mission. The observatory is a member of the International Asteroid Warning Network and describes itself as being among the world’s top five observatories for collecting measurements of near-Earth objects used to refine their orbits and assess potential threats.
Visitors encounter this scientific work through organised programmes rather than a conventional museum visit. Astro Night combines astronomy presentations, an observatory tour and, when conditions permit, practical observation of the night sky.
Explore Višnjan Observatory
During Astro Night, visitors begin with a presentation covering astronomy, science or the work carried out at the observatory. The programme then takes participants through the observatory and into the dome housing the main telescope used for asteroid tracking.
The large research telescope inside the dome is not used for public viewing. Instead, when weather conditions are suitable, visitors observe visible celestial objects through an amateur telescope set up on the meadow in front of the observatory.
The evening concludes with a guided introduction to constellations using a laser pointer. The combination of a working research environment, direct contact with astronomy and outdoor sky observation makes the programme particularly suitable for curious families and visitors interested in science.
